Energy Outreach and Assessment Center
Penn State teamed up with the Philadelphia Energy Authority to demonstrate a scalable approach to facilitating building energy assessments in small food sales and service businesses in Philadelphia. Penn State trained students to conduct energy assessments and if retrofit opportunities were financially viable, information was shared with an energy services contractor who created retrofit proposals and conducted equipment upgrades. This project tested new approaches to finding a market solution in overcoming barriers that prevent small energy-intensive independent businesses from investing in targeted energy efficient investments. Work was funded by the PA Department of Environmental Protection.
Convenience Stores Energy Efficiency
Researchers at the Navy Yard evaluated data from over 1,400 stores in eastern U.S. to determine transferrable ways to continually improve energy efficiency in small energy intensive buildings to reduce energy costs per sale.
